DTZ – German Test for Immigrants

The Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (DTZ) concludes the integration course and is graded at either A2 or B1. The result matters for citizenship applications and for many residence-permit questions.

What is the DTZ?

The Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer is the final exam of the language part of the integration course. It is scaled: everyone sits the same exam, and depending on your performance the result is A2 or B1. Together with the Life in Germany test, a B1 result earns you the integration course certificate.

A DTZ at B1 is the usual proof of German for a settlement permit and for citizenship. The certificate does not expire.

Exam format

The written part takes about 100 minutes: listening (about 25 minutes), reading (about 45 minutes) and writing (30 minutes, a semi-formal letter or email covering four points). The speaking exam is taken in pairs and lasts about 15 minutes: introducing yourself, talking about a picture and planning something together.

The topics come from everyday life in Germany, such as public offices, work, housing, health, children and school. No specialist knowledge is tested.

Registration and cost

If you attend an integration course, your course provider registers you, and the first attempt is free for course participants. Without a course you can register as an external candidate directly with a licensed exam centre; you then pay an exam fee set by the provider.

Language schools hold the DTZ on fixed dates, often several times a month. Below are the cities where language schools on Sprachschulwerk post DTZ dates.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fail the DTZ?

The DTZ is scaled: the result is B1, A2 or below A2. If you do not reach B1, the certificate states the level you did reach, and you can retake the exam.

How long until I get my result?

Usually a few weeks. The exam centre or course provider sends the certificate once marking is complete.

Is the DTZ enough for citizenship?

A DTZ result at B1 meets the language requirement. You also need the citizenship test, or the Life in Germany test with at least 17 correct answers.

Is the DTZ the same as telc Deutsch B1?

No. Both certify B1, but the DTZ is a separate, scaled exam for the integration course with everyday topics. telc Deutsch B1 is a general language exam open to anyone.
